Natural Treatments for Acne-Prone Skin There are several extra steps you can take for the reduction and prevention of acne. Consider your skin care regimen, and fine-tune it to meet the needs of skin that is prone to bacterial infection, overproduction of sebum and clogging of pores. Nutrition: An adequate amount of water is vital for helping your skin fight off infection. Zinc can also help balance sebum production. Diet is also very important. Refined sugar among other things have been shown to interact with insulin levels directly and negatively. Cleansing: Don’t over wash your face – it only stimulates more sebum production. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser no more than twice a day. Make sure to remove ALL makeup from your face before bed. Makeup can exacerbate the clogging of your pores. Toning: Do not use toners with alcohol on your skin, even if you are tempted to. You are better off using a gentle antiseptic like benzyl peroxide or tea tree oil. Protection: Use antioxidant protection on your face daily and a non-oily sunscreen before going outside. Moisturizer: Gently wet your face with filtered or spring water before adding your moisturizer, and chose a non-oily moisturizer. Masks: You may want to consider using a clay mask to unclog pores several times a week. Cosmetic clays absorb oils, toxins and dirt from within the pores, and they are especially useful against blackheads. Don’t overdo it, they can be drying if overused. Other Treatments: · Tea Tree Oil: Dot eruptions with tea tree oil and a Q-tip before bed. · Sleep: Change your pillowcase and facial cloths on a daily basis to stop re-infection. · Habits: Keep your hands away from your face to prevent re-infection, and never, never, never pick! You WILL be scarred for life.
